Slowfire Raku Clay + Firing Program Available exclusively to current Slowfire Flexible Adult participants and members. $150 Raku Package The introductory package includes: 10 pounds of Slowfire raku clay Access to Slowfire’s designated raku glazes Bisque firing of eligible raku pieces Participation in one scheduled raku firing session Up to four pieces, each no larger than approximately 8 inches in any direction ( or the approx equivalent) Glaze application and preparation guidance Kiln firing, reduction materials, equipment, and staff supervision Participants will create their pieces independently during their regular class or studio access. Formal instruction and regular studio access are not included in the package. Additional Firing Dates After completing the introductory package, participants may register for additional raku firing dates for $75 per session. Larger pieces require advance approval and may incur an additional fee. The number of pieces accepted may also be limited by kiln capacity. Tentative Firing Schedule: Mid-October (10.10 or 10.17) Early or mid-November Additional dates based on participation and weather Advance registration is required for each firing date. Raku is weather-dependent, so sessions may be postponed due to rain, high winds, extreme temperatures, or other unsafe conditions. Program Rules Only designated Slowfire raku clay may be used. Pieces must be completely dry and bisque-fired before the firing session. Pieces must be submitted for bisque firing at least two weeks before the scheduled firing date. All pieces must meet Slowfire’s size and construction requirements. Enclosed forms, overly thick walls, and fragile attachments will not be accepted. Tiny work will also not be accepted. We must be able to grab it with tongs. All work is subject to staff approval. Participants must attend the complete safety demonstration before participating. Participants must wear closed-toe shoes, long pants, and clothing made from natural fibers. Raku is an unpredictable firing process. Cracking, breakage, smoke markings, and glaze variations are possible and are part of the experience. Raku-fired work is decorative and is not food-safe.
