Service Description

In Handbuilding Ceramics Studio, students explore the art of building with clay using foundational techniques that form the backbone of ceramic design. This class focuses on slab, coil, and sculptural construction methods while encouraging thoughtful craftsmanship and personal expression. Artists will learn how to plan and construct functional and sculptural forms such as vessels, lidded containers, wall pieces, sculptural objects, and small installations. Emphasis is placed on structure, proportion, surface design, and glazing techniques. Students will experiment with carving, texture tools, underglazes, and layered glazing methods to create depth and visual interest in their work. As the semester progresses, students will gain greater independence in designing and executing their own original projects. Skill development includes: Strong slab and coil construction Structural problem-solving Scoring and joining techniques Surface decoration and texture development Glaze application and finishing methods This class is ideal for students ready to move beyond introductory clay and build both technical ability and creative confidence. Beginners are welcome, and more experienced students will be challenged to refine their form, craftsmanship, and artistic voice.
