During the Fall 1 semester, Ms. Carrie and Ms. Amy led two Ceramics classes with Slowfire at Whittier Elementary, teaching Grades K-2 on Wednesdays and Grades 3-5 on Fridays.
In Ms. Carrie’s class, the young artists created trinket dishes, monster pots, pumpkins, mugs, nesting flower dishes, and leaf bowls! Ms. Amy’s class crafted animal pinch pots, coil bowls, paint palettes, mugs, and pumpkins!
Throughout the semester, students explored the fundamentals of ceramic handbuilding, including managing clay moisture levels, "scratch and attach" techniques for joining pieces, and basic forms like slab building, pinch pots, and coil building. They also experimented with slump and hump molds to shape their clay.
Once their creations were built, students brought them to life by painting with vibrant underglazes before finishing with a final glaze coat. Take a look at all their hard work so far!
