Service Description
This six-week class is designed for teens ages 11–14 who are considered advanced beginners in their clay experience, and want to explore both handbuilding and wheel throwing. Students will work with Raku clay to create their own projects, which will later be transformed in a special Raku firing. With a “Spooky Season” theme, projects might include pumpkin lanterns, ghostly figures, candle holders, or autumn-inspired platters—festive, creative pieces that capture the magic of fall. Classes meet on Tuesdays from 4–6pm (9/2, 9/9, 9/16, 9/23, 9/30, and 10/7). At the end of the session, students will have the opportunity to watch an exciting outdoor Raku firing on Saturday, October 18. While the actual firing process will be handled by our adult instructors for safety, teens will get to see their creations undergo the dramatic transformation that makes Raku so special. Red-hot pieces are pulled directly from the kiln and placed into combustible materials, creating smoke, crackle patterns, and metallic finishes. Each piece comes out completely unique—an unforgettable way to celebrate the season. The class fee is $185 plus $45 for clay, and finished work is invoiced per kiln load ($85 per load, fitting 4–6 moderate-sized pieces). Because of the special clay and firing process, Raku work cannot be done during regular practice times. Minimum 4 students to run this course.
