Service Description
Discover the magic of Raku in this special series of adult workshops designed for adventurous makers who want to experience one of the most dramatic firing techniques in ceramics. In your 4-hour class ($100 per session), you’ll hand-build or throw pieces using Raku clay, preparing them for the unforgettable outdoor Raku firing. A minimum of 3 students is required for each clay workshop to run. Clay is purchased separately at $65 for a 25lb bag, which includes the cost of bisque firing, kiln firing, and tech. What is Raku? Raku is a centuries-old Japanese firing technique known for its immediacy, unpredictability, and stunning results. In this process, glowing red-hot pottery is removed directly from the kiln and placed into combustible materials such as sawdust or paper. The sudden flames, smoke, and rapid cooling create dramatic metallic finishes, smoky crackle patterns, and one-of-a-kind surfaces that can’t be replicated. Every firing is unique, making each piece a true original and the experience unforgettable. Raku firing dates are Saturday, 10/18 (1–4pm) and Saturday, 10/25 (9am–4pm). Firings are led by Tyler! Kiln loads are $85 each, and one load can accommodate 4–6 moderate-sized pieces. *A shared Google calendar will be available for firing sign-ups. Important Note on Materials Raku clay MUST be kept completely separate from cone 6 studio clay. Even small amounts of cross-contamination can cause major kiln problems and damage other artists’ work. For this reason, Raku clay and slip may NOT be used during regular practice times, and all tools, buckets, and sponges must be rinsed thoroughly after use. Students in violation of this rule will be asked to leave the studio.
